| Fishing The Great Lakes Region McCloud River (CA) rainbow trout were first introduced into the Great Lakes region in 1876. In the 1890's, the first runs of self sustaining steelhead in the Great Lakes were documented in the Little Manistee River, MI. By the 1900's steelhead were firmly established in the tributaries of the upper Great Lakes. Currently, the Ohio DNR stocks two strains of steelhead trout: a domesticated London strain and fingerling's raised from the eggs of the Little Manistee River steelhead which are direct descendants of the West Coast McCloud river rainbow trout. Ohio has two runs of steelhead, Fall and Spring. Fall run begins late September to early October when the water in the river becomes colder than the lake. Fall run is comprised of London strain steelhead. These fish remain in the rivers through the early spring until they spawn providing good fishing throughout the winter. Spring run is Manistee strain steelhead. They enter the tributaries late February to early March as the streams ice out and the water warms. |
